It’s these imperfections and the musicians choice in how subtleties/dynamics, vibrato and rubato (robbing time) are to be carried out as the performance progresses, that gives a sense of realism. Additional to the performance from the musician, the technical aspects of the recording process add further layers of originality/uniqueness to the music. They would include the type and number of microphones, the preamp quality, the room sound, how far or near the microphones are from the instrument and an enormous myriad of audio tools that are at the recording engineer’s disposal within the digital audio workstation software.
